Abstract
The artist's statement: I am firmly in the camp against "never judge a book by its cover". I believe that a cover can make or break a story. It sets expectations in the reader's mind before they even read the first word, and that single momentary judgement impacts every page that follows. Put the cover of "Love and Gelato" on "A Little Life" and the results would be catastrophic! As a designer and illustrator, I most often work with books, mostly on the exterior but occasionally also on the interior of the text block. I am thrilled with every opportunity I can get to work with a writer to further communicate their story to readers. Being trusted to take a volume of words that have been so thought through and treasured and make a single image to introduce it is the greatest honor. This process always takes a lot of collaboration between myself and the author. I accumulate and merge their goals, my own read of the story, as well as general genre conventions to create one cohesive image that can start off their story with good, firm footing. It almost always takes multiple revisions to get to this point but once there, it is the most satisfying feeling to have gotten it right.
