dc.description.abstract | The artist's statement: My name is Kieran Bradigan, and I am an artist. For a long time, I debated with myself whether or not I should call myself that. After all, what really makes an artist? I have always struggled with the concept of identity, of where I belong; and I make art to reflect that. I am queer and trans. Growing up, knowing that I was different, alienated me to the world- and even to my own family. I often wondered what labels correctly identified me and what box I belonged in. I spent probably too much time figuring out what to call myself in my early teens, something which I have grown to regret. I found my solace, my escape from labels, in art. I came into art school as little more than an enthusiastic doodler, and with an appreciation for aesthetics. I had no formal training, and found myself right in the middle of the whirlwind of art academics. To say it was a struggle is putting it mildly. But, with every failure and every brutal critique, I found myself growing. It was a painful yet beautiful process, and eventually I became comfortable with calling myself an artist. I use a variety of mediums in my work for a variety of reasons. Digital drawing programs, for their accessibility and versatility, graphite and charcoal for their soft and forgiving nature, collage for its unique and eye-catching aesthetics…so on and so forth. I believe in adaptability, and how moving from a familiar medium to an unfamiliar one can create revelations in the art process. | en_US |
