Abstract
This study provides an implementable method for constructing the dynamic response of a semi-infinite elastic cylinder. The cylinder is assumed to be composed of any number of homogeneous, transversely isotropic, coaxial layers. The source of the excitation is an axisymmetric normal pressure applied to the free end of the cylinder. At each frequency, the propagating modes are retained and the evanescent modes are ignored, making the solution an approximation to the exact equations of elasticity. This approach yields a solution that is well suited for multiple mode waveguides in which the length of the waveguide is very large compared with its diameter.
