Abstract

The artist's statement: I have been fascinated with design for as long as I can remember. I believe my most formative years as an artist are rooted in some of my fondest childhood memories. During the early nineties, my sister and I were fortunate to grow up with a mountain of vintage children’s books and classic Nickelodeon shows which helped develop my interest in studying illustration and commercial art. My grandma, a beloved home economics teacher, was also a considerable creative influence for me as she was always sewing, embroidering, or cooking for the family and allowing me to help. Now the years have passed quicker than I realized, and as I get older, I frequently find myself longing to return to the past. My work is often born from nostalgia. I typically rely on vintage advertisements and illustrations to draw inspiration in my work, but perhaps ironically, I prefer to create art using only contemporary digital platforms. Graphic designers have the benefit of being equipped with tools to emulate virtually any style and medium. As such, I believe every project can provide a valuable opportunity for widespread creative exploration through creative time travel. I enjoy exploring previously popular genres, styles, and mediums from various eras in history to learn successful design systems and apply them to my work. In my study of vintage aesthetics, I am careful to consider composition, color, and texture to create a cohesive visual language that will excite yet resonate with contemporary audiences. It is my hope that in viewing my work you will find something new, yet familiar as well.
