The artist's statement: In my daily life, I have become interested in the distinctive sensory and emotional impressions made on me as I perceive my ever-changing surroundings. Many of the people, places, and things that I see, and sometimes come to know, capture my attention and engage me in a way that is articulate and new. As I take in what is happening around me, I begin to form a greater sense of these things. My work functions to preserve and elaborate on my experiences in these moments of realization of the extraordinary and to venerate the subject of each experience. Rather than working exclusively figuratively, I use line, color, shape, and form non-representationally to allude to my subject and, more importantly, to give an idea of the unseen senses and emotions relating to my experience of it. While my work is primarily oil on canvas, my process often incorporates handwoven textiles, embroidery, and hand-dying techniques as well. The tactile and fluid nature of folds of fabric allows for them to be manipulated to mimic and enhance the organic forms of my paintings, as well as add dimension to works. Simultaneously, the forms, patterns, and color transitions derived from dying a canvas create more complex layering and inform the colors and shapes painted on them. Though each instance I depict is new and unique to me, my work and use of materials within it allow viewers to share a similar feeling of curiosity or recall some familiarity to a memory of their own.en_US
