At high frequencies, the performance of active filters is impaired by the frequency dependent nature of the operational amplifiers. Much research has been devoted to the design of active filters with reduced dependence on the active devices; however no general analysis scheme or method of comparing existing filters has emerged. A general characterization of second-order active-RC filters employing one, two, and three operational amplifier(s) is given. A method of comparing active filters with respect to the active devices based on the active sensitivity function is introduced. Conditions necessary for zero pole, ωo, Q, and transfer-function-magnitude active sensitivities are derived. Several novel circuits that possess these zero-active-sensitivity properties are presented. The markedly superior performance of these filters is demonstrated by a comparison of second-order zero-active-sensitivity filters with other popular existing realizations. Experimental results that agree favorably with the theoretical results of these filters are presented.
