The artist's statement: My name is Aurora Norton, I am a Graphic Designer and Photographer studying at Colorado State University. I work almost exclusively with Adobe programs, especially Illustrator, In-Design, and Lightroom. While I am the most versed in Photography with 7+ years of experience and clients under my belt. I found myself exploring more just Lightroom and branching out into logo design and branding for local companies. I appreciate illustration, it is while not my strong suit… I am much more successful in typography focused projects, and to narrow it down further most of my work leans minimalistic and clean. I have always loved art and have experimented with almost every medium I could get my hands on from pottery to film and printmaking. The works presented offer some of my most recent work. "Happy Hour" was both a challenge and a creative outlet for me. One of my jobs is at an Oyster Bar here in Fort Collins wherein I have been in and out of several intensive trainings on food and wine pairings. My inspiration for this book was my very own knowledge and experiences with food and wine pairings. After experimenting with my own water color and line drawings to find the 'vibe' of my book. Eventually I pursued illustrations from a mix of food paintings by Melissa Josie (A water-color painter that I collaborated with to best bring my vision to life) and my own illustrations that I took a modern and organized twist on to keep the book going but also break up the different sections appropriately. My Opera Poster was a 'Bauhaus' inspired style that focuses on the element on time in the Opera "La Boheme"- A love story between a man and a woman both who suffer from different ailments that are shortening their time together. My take on the time element was to create abstract clocks and hourglasses around the title of the Opera; being both direct but subtle. The third project shown here in Figure 3 was the result from my 'Tilted' card deck. I decided to design my deck with the tilted theme and pushed the boundaries of negative and positive space in each card. My goal was to hone in on what defined each suit or number cut it super close so the viewer would still know what card it was and still appreciate the creativity that went with it. My work overall has grown immensely and shown me what I am capable of as well as expanded my skillset.
