Abstract

Irrigation and other agricultural practices have had a profound impact on the environment in Eastern and Central Europe. The focus here is on water resources, the impact of irrigation on the environment, and the impact of agriculture on surface water and groundwater. Main impacts have been: • Environmental degradation resulting from irrigation's heavy reliance on energy for lifting and pressurizing the water; and • Degradation of surface water and groundwater from various sources, including agriculture. Agriculture's impact derives primarily' from feedlots and from non-point sources such as fertilizers and pesticides. Increases in prices for fertilizers, pesticides, and energy will generally have positive impact upon water resource quality, and on the environment.
