dc.description.abstract | In the finite element method (FEM), constructing three-dimensional (3D) models of irregular geometries of structures can be technically difficult and cost-inefficient due to the requirement for expensive equipment such as three-dimensional laser scanner. Along with the rapid development of photogrammetry in 3D modeling, an appropriate application of advanced photogrammetric technologies in FEM can greatly facilitate productivity where analysis of a large number of irregular geometries is needed. In this study, a quasi-automatic, user-friendly approach to construct 3D finite element models using advanced techniques in the field of photogrammetry is introduced and successfully applied to example geometries of structural mechanics. The 3D models were constructed in a photogrammetric program from 2D photo sequences taken by ordinary commercial cameras and then analyzed in a FEM software package. General guidance of using photogrammetric approach to acquire feasible 3D models for FEM analysis was also included. Convergence of stresses and deformation of the structure were found in the analyses with increasing number of discretized elements. The approach introduced in this thesis is recommended for the FEM analyses of structures with irregular geometries and homogeneous materials when conventional methods are less effective due to the difficult modeling process. | |
