Abstract
The artist's statement: Exploring processes through painting, printmaking, and sketching, I excavate spaces to layer. Ink, pencils, and acrylic paint pens bring my focus to smaller details. Each hand etched line, every selective ink wipe, all strokes of paint. Rendered components that reveal themselves at a closer glance are where I find comfort and creativity. Curiosity extends a hand to pull me in for a deeper look. What new things can I see now that I didn't before? Through my own creative abilities, I strive to make moments which continuously call me closer. Titled after my central painting, It's The Little Things invites you to find pocket sized moments which fulfill that same wonder, whether within my artistic creation or beyond these walls. When I was younger I clung to wildlife of all kinds. Dinosaurs were my original, personal favorite. These dragon-like, ancient saurians trudged through the same ground we walk today. Yet, their inherent existence still emanates a fairy tale. How, then, can we as animals connect them to our current habitats, ecosystems, and familiar coexisting species? Through my lifelong love of wildlife I combine patterns of birds that live today carefully with a prehistoric reptilian. As I painted each adorning feather and mixed hues until I was satisfied, my birds and my dinosaurs became as real as they have always been. Seeing my conglomerate flock of herbivores and carnivores alike makes me think of little me. She'd flip through this picture book and recognize each bird and dinosaur illustrated. But I don't need to think about her, because she is me. I shuffle through the printed paintings, feeling my chest burst with excitement–I know that bird, and I know that dinosaur. I already do what I knew she would have, and I always feel as imaginative as she does.
