Abstract
This first section of a novel by the same name follows the Weisses, an American family in 1876 who own and operate a brewery in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, now a part of Pittsburgh. The novel is told by three point-of-view characters: Gregor, Anselm, and Clara. Though a work of fiction, some of the characters are based on real people, including Adolphus Busch of Budweiser fame. The novel deals with issues of ethnicity, family, religion, and ambition.
