Our homes are the heart of our communities and the hubs of our lives. Studies have shown that adults in the U.S. spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, much of that at home, with over 30% of working adults working from home most or part of the time. While we have learned much over the past few decades about the environmental and social determinants of health related to built environments, these understandings have not translated into new standards and practices for the development of residential environments. We know more now than ever about how our environments can affect our health, wellness, and longevity. Lifelong Homes & Communities are thoughtfully designed with these factors in mind. The Lifelong Homes & Communities guidance systems introduced in this report provide ways to create homes and communities that can help us live our best lives, at any age and ability. Lifelong Homes & Communities provide benefits to elderly family members, people living with injuries or disabilities, families with young children, and really anyone. Features such as wider doorways, easily operable handles and switches, good lighting, and healthy indoor air make life better for all. Other features provide flexibility and adaptability so that homes can help accommodate whatever needs families or visitors may face. It s time to rethink how our homes can work for us, helping us to live our best lives both now and in the future.
