Abstract
Constructions underneath the water table involving the drawing down of the water table to a prescribed level modify the groundwater flow field. The groundwater flow field around the construction site is simulated using mathematical models. Attention is focused on three situations, namely, the situations before, during and after construction. These are chosen as representative of the undisturbed situation, of the strongest impact during the construction phase and of the long term impact after construction. The study of the above-mentioned scenarios within a groundwater monitoring program offers a useful tool in order to quantify the impact of the project on groundwater systems.
