Presented at the Bridging the gap: collaborative conservation from the ground up conference, September 8-11, 2009, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, sponsored by the Center for Collaborative Conservation, https://collaborativeconservation.org/. This conference brought together people with experience working collaboratively to achieve both conservation and livelihood goals in tribal nations, rangelands, forests, watersheds, agricultural lands, and urban areas. Sally Collins was named director of the USDA Office of Ecosystem Services and Markets (OESM) in December 2008. OESM plays an instrumental role in advancing markets for services provided by farms, forests and ranches across the country. As director, Collins supports the USDA Secretary in developing uniform, science-based guidelines and the infrastructure necessary to make ecosystem markets function, including procedures and tools for measuring, reporting and registering environmental benefits produced by land management activities. Collins has spent more than 25 years in public service. She served most recently as associate chief for the U.S. Forest Service. She received her B.S. from the University of Colorado and her master's from the University of Wyoming.

The conservation challenges of today call for fresh, innovative thinking and a renewed commitment to collaboration. In this spirit, the USDA Office of Ecosystem Services and Markets is working to catalyze the development of ecosystem markets that can unlock new opportunities for land conservation and community well-being. Sally Collins will discuss the state of emerging markets, the vision of the new office, and how knowledge networks, collaborative learning, and shared leadership will drive success.
