The CASPA survival guide: a comprehensive roadmap for pre-physician assistant students

Abstract

Physician assistant (PA) programs are becoming more competitive, and students are expected to do a lot more than just have good grades. They need clinical experience, strong relationships for letters of recommendation, and a clear understanding of the profession. Even with all the information online, the application process can still feel confusing and overwhelming. This project focuses on making that process easier to understand. The purpose of this project is to break down the PA application process and create a guide that actually helps undergraduate students know what to do and how to prepare. To do this, I used information from professional organizations, PA program websites, and application tools like CASPA, GRE, CASPer, and PA-CAT, then organized everything into one place. The final product, The CASPA Survival Guide, walks through the main parts of the application, including prerequisites, clinical experience, standardized testing, letters of recommendation, personal statements, and timelines. One of the biggest takeaways is that being a strong applicant isn't just having good stats. It’s about submitting applications early, building meaningful experiences, and applying in a way that reflects your goals and fits the program. This project helps simplify a process that can feel overwhelming and gives students a clearer way to approach applying to PA school.
