    Abstract
These seven short stories explore, through narrative, themes of connection and disconnection, of association and isolation, of love and abandonment, and of the unsinkable human desire to return oneself to an unattainable feeling of wholeness. They are told through broken and vulnerable midwestern, mostly working-class characters who both seek and shun comfort and stasis within their choices and their community though storytelling and mythic characters, while also struggling to create their own idealized identity through disassociation and escape.
