Abstract

This thesis consists of a fictional novella generally responding to the traditional conventions of the gothic novel. The story is about Gertrude Means, a recent widow who, upon learning that she is about to lose her house, takes a job as caretaker of an old estate called Paradiso. While at Paradiso, as she attempts to deal with her grief and the expectations of her new position, she begins to realize that a presence haunts the estate. Gertrude wants desperately to believe that the presence is that of her late husband, Jack, but it quickly becomes obvious that the presence is actually someone much more dangerous. As Gertrude's identity slowly begins to fracture under the power and malevolence of the presence, the experience forces her to also remember old, repressed conflicts within her marriage, resulting in an eventual collapse of her sense of self.
