Abstract

The artist's statement: As a painter my work explores the definitions of consciousness. As defined by the Cambridge English Dictionary, consciousness is described as: "the state of being awake, aware of what is around you, and able to think...[or] the fact of noticing the existence of something."Consciousness is abstract, therefore it cannot truly be explained in words. Through rendering paint, I challenge the way the viewer experiences are and themselves. I challenge the perception of what consciousness is through surrealistic renderings to uncover the shortcomings of its definition. I do this through the exploration of what consciousness is, could be, and entails. In my paintings, I create scenes residing in nature and incorporate symbolism using animals, color, and organic forms.
Artist's statement, continued: As a graphic designer, I am to reinvent consumerism by designing elements for companies that have a positive impact. My practice is entirely reliant upon initial hand-rendering. I simply cannot begin a project without the inclusion of pencil-and-paper. It is important for me to realize that I am curating a message to the viewer and I have much control over this. I want to use design to convey issues that are important to me. Issues such as: environmental activism, politics, gay rights, and food production and agriculture, can all be explained or advocated for using graphic design. These issues being discussed visually, have much more of an impact than someone reading an article about the matter. At times, I battle with Graphic Design's connection with consumerism. However, if working for the right company that shares my values, I will be able to design wholeheartedly. I believe it is possible to create a positive lens which people view the world through.
