Laboratory-based studies have shown that combustion sources emit volatile organic compounds that can be photo-oxidized in the atmosphere to form secondary organic aerosol (SOA). In some cases, this SOA can exceed direct emissions of primary organic aerosol (POA). Jathar et al.
