Item Open Access An application of Catholic symbolism featuring Blessed Chiara Badano, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, and Saint Teresa of Calcutta(Colorado State University. Libraries, 2024) Harmon, Caroline, authorThis paper explores Catholic symbolism as it relates to the portraits I have created of three remarkable individuals: Blessed Chiara "Luce" Badano, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, and Saint Teresa of Calcutta. It opens with a broad discussion of the historical relationship between art and the Catholic Church, tracing how artistic expression has been intrinsically linked to the faith since its inception. This examination encompasses the use of visual arts in liturgy, the role of artists as conveyors of theological concepts, and the way sacred imagery can shape the spiritual lives of churchgoers. Following this historical context, the paper presents concise and detailed biographies of the three figures. It delves into the lives of Chiara, Pier Giorgio, and Teresa, highlighting their backgrounds, key life events, and the defining moments that led them to be recognized as models of holiness. For instance, it discusses Chiara's vibrant faith in her battle with illness, Pier Giorgio's enthusiastic commitment to social justice and outreach, and Teresa's profound dedication to the poorest of the poor. The analysis continues by examining how the symbols depicted in the portraits of these holy individuals—such as a grapevine and wheat, flowers, and a cross-anchor—reflect their values and spiritual journeys. Ultimately, this work highlights the profound connection between art and the Catholic faith and the lived experiences of these three saints, illustrating how their stories continue to resonate within the Catholic community today.Item Open Access Positive connections in conservation expressed through art(Colorado State University. Libraries, 2024-11-28) Muse, Kalandra, authorThe mainstream perception of humans and nature is generally negative, grabbing the attention of audiences around the world and cementing the idea that humans are not a part of nature. However, this is a limited perception as people do have positive relationships with nature and have acted on conservation issues. Highlighting and recognizing "positivity" in the relationship between humans and nature can bring about many benefits such as providing people with more motivation to act, healthier lives, and becoming more productive when working on such issues. Through the use of artwork, feelings are invoked in audiences outside of those within conservation management through the use of composition, color, and movement within the art. Using the themes of exploration and discovery, nature in media, inventions inspired by nature, animals and humans working together, nature for human well-being, and conservation success stories, there are many examples of humans and nature having positive connections. Using the drawing app IbisPaintX I developed artwork to represent these themes and connect research and artistry into a final product. This project aims to highlight the areas where people have positive relationships with nature, even in small ways, through an artistic lens to inspire greater levels of care and concern for natural environments to ignite conservation action that can benefit both people and nature.Item Open Access The Barbie movie and the psychological experience of gender inequality(Colorado State University. Libraries, 2024-10-24) Nolan, Eden, E., authorAs societies reach toward gender equality, it is often assumed that issues of gender inequality and discrimination are rare. However, instances of gender discrimination and inequality have become more subtle than overt, and still cause harm across individuals. The transition of gender discrimination from overt instances to subtle instances has caused society to be dismissive of statements that claim gender inequality is still a significant issue today. In this work, the 2023 Barbie movie is evaluated as a statement of gender inequality in the United States. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate how subtle gender inequality manifests itself, and to explain this manifestation through the psychological explanations of gender inequality. The thesis addresses questions such as, "How is gender discrimination seen today?", "How does gender discrimination impact people?", and "Why does gender discrimination still exist today?" through the analysis of the Barbie movie. The purpose of the thesis is to highlight examples of gender discrimination, and thoroughly analyze a piece of media that acknowledges gender inequality, and address that gender inequality is a problem that is continuously experienced across cultures. The movie is separated by scenes, where each scene is explained and evaluated through psychological studies that explain the specific experience of the related scene. The investigation of gender inequalities represented in the Barbie movie culminates in an artistic reflection that elaborates on the author’s experience with gender.
