Libraries, 2017) Hart, Britton, artistThe artist's statement: My name is Britton Hart and I am a Designer, Illustrator, Photographer, and 3D motion manipulator. An exceptionally multi-faceted artist, I enjoy wearing many different hats. This mentality has allowed me to explore and establish proficiency in many disciplines, including but not limited to; Design (Graphic, Package, UI/UX and Web), Illustration, Photography and Videography (digital/analogue), 3D motion Graphics and Rendering, and Fine Art. The work that I strive to create is based on visual narrative, story, and emotion. My goal is to create an experience that helps the viewer understand and recognize the meaning and goals of the work presented almost instantaneously but leaves enough to interpretation that creates a sense of wonder and curiosity. Through my medium, I strive to connect on a subconscious level with the audiences hopes, desires, and aspirations.Item Open Access Elyssa Evans: capstone(Colorado State University. Libraries, 2017) Evans, Elyssa, artistThe artist's statement: A prominent theme of my work is the blending of different eras, of old and of new, of retro and modern, in aesthetics or in methods of creation. Digital art and design, while a relatively new and modern form of art making, has already had a robust history and quick evolution from primitive shapes to highly detailed rendering. By calling upon different elements and modes of creation from this history, while also drawing influence from modern design and artists, I can create works that both honor and recognize the history of digital art making and create my own unique body of work. My work is also influenced by travel, language and culture, as related to my study of different languages and cultures, and my experience traveling to different countries. These new experiences allow me a unique perspective on issues, modes of creation and aesthetics, because I can draw on a variety of viewpoints and opinions I have been exposed to via these experiences. My work is influenced by artists whose works feature bright colors, a graphic style of illustration, and busy and full compositions. One such artist is Takashi Murakami, whose vibrant color schemes and character's reminiscent of retro cartoons or games inspire the bold colors and retro illustration style I often use in my own work. Another artist I draw influence from is Tomokazu Matsuyama. His paintings also feature bold colors, and the flat, graphical way he is able to lay together the different patterns and effects within his art have influenced the way I organize my own compositions. Creating digital artwork and design in the modern age involves constant innovation. Often this innovation comes from new technology and software, while other times it comes from new ways to manipulate existing software or new ways to display digital artwork. My own work is innovative by utilizing cutting-edge technology, such as VR, and displaying retro styles like pixel art animation in a modern way, like on an iPad or via a modern in-browser game. This combination of aesthetics gives my work a timeless feeling and positive outlook towards digital art's future.Item Open Access Maddie Shackelford: capstone(Colorado State University. Libraries, 2017) Shackelford, Maddie, artistThe artist's statement: There used to be an uncomfortable tension between art and craft. That pressure has since dissipated and been replaced with a new tension - that between art and design. Arguably art and design are different, however I am interested in how they can be the same. Design is becoming less and less about simply displaying information in a visually stimulating way, and more about user experience, empathy and psychology. Being interested in both fine art and Graphic Design, I want to explore how that user experience can be heightened by art, and how design can inspire and grow from roots founded in art. When I design or make something, my best projects and work occur when I come from a place of empathy. I enjoy designing, making objects, and creating experiences that are tailored to a user and what they will enjoy from my work. It is important that my designs for anything from a poster to an application never inhibit the person that is going to use or see it from understanding what they need to. Design should never get in the way of function, but should instead elevate it. I think this still leaves much room for art within design. Designers should be artists; they should know how to draw, paint and make. Designers should have a fundamental understanding of the principals of art in addition to regularly exercising the way artists think about their work in their own designs. Design without art is dull. In both visual and user experience design I focus on what emotions and feelings a person will have when looking through a book, at a poster, or perusing a magazine article I have designed. The content I am designing for always has a purpose or a message, so I strive to make my design reflect that purpose. If the content is exuberant my design will be more playful. If the content is more mellow and simple my design is more simplistic and calming. It is important that my design first asks what its user or audience will require of it and primarily fills that functional need. Secondary to that I strive to fulfill the user's desire for beauty and aesthetic appeal, although in many cases beauty and functionality are one in the same. The meaning behind my design work rarely comes directly from me. Meaning must always be inspired by the purpose of the design and whom it is for. In art making, a piece is often imbued with meaning by its maker, in design the opposite is true. I feel that my designs give me meaning and purpose. As a designer, the job I get to do every day boils down to helping people. Design helps people understand their world better; it helps them navigate faster and more easily in a rapidly changing domain. Good design creates understanding, elevates content, and brings art to the world in a way so subtle it often goes unrecognized.Item Open Access Rachel Stern: capstone(Colorado State University. Libraries, 2017) Stern, Rachel, artistThe artist's statement: Design is everywhere to the point that is has become a necessity in any project, company, or experience. Yet, so often I find that design is treated as an afterthought. When I approach design I see it as more than just a pretty logo or nice colors quickly thrown on top to make something appealing, for the purpose of design is so much more. Design creates emotion, makes a mark on the world, and most importantly it tells a story. These aspects is what create a relationship with the user and ultimately it creates a brand people can trust. We as humans care more about our relationships with our friends and family than our things. I strive to create a strong brand so whatever I design can feel a part of the family. It is that mindset that I always focus on in every project. No matter what is being designed, what makes it unique or relatable must be the focus. I see it as my job to encapsulate the emotion and the values and translate that into the design. I focus heavily on color and movement to convey and amplify that feeling to anyone who will interact with the piece. I focus on simplicity of the design first to create a feel that is easy to take in from the viewer's point of view and then tell the story in the details to keep their attention. Relationships mean so much to us, and it is hard to create a relationship with something that has no story. Building these aspects creates loyalty and attachment from the viewer to the brand and that is what matters most to me. I became a designer to bring beauty to our world, but I also want to bring meaning to it. Too often do I buy something from the store that brings me little joy because it is just an object. However, when something has personality, meaning and a reputation, I am the first to share with those I care about. I have always loved telling stories, and in design I help others tell theirs.
