Libraries, 2017-02) Thilmany, Dawn, author; Chriestenson, Chad, author; Martin, Michael, author; Sullins, Martha, author; Jablonski, Becca, author; Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Colorado State University, publisherStarting in 1996, the Colorado Department of Agriculture identified the need to better understand how: a) the citizens of Colorado viewed the agricultural industry as a whole; b) the public perceives emerging policies meant to support or influence the role of agriculture in Colorado; and c) and how the Department's own programs were valued. In 2016, as they have every five years since 1996, they partnered with Colorado State University to frame a survey that would evaluate the public's attitudes about such issues as food prices, food safety, pesticide use, environmental practices, wildlife and agriculture, animal welfare, land use, population growth and agricultural land preservation, among other things. A determined effort to uncover the ingredients of small operations' successes initiated this analysis of data from the 2008 Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS)3 that is conducted by USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS) and National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). This document is an executive summary of the findings from the three fact sheets, and it will detail the methods used to categorize operations from the 2008 ARMS data. As the average age of America's farmers reaches 60, the next generation of farmers and ranchers are seeking innovative ways to gain access to the knowledge, resources and markets that will become available. One way to creatively address these obstacles for new farmers is Farm Incubator programs. This factsheet aims to outline the information and resources compiled during a Comprehensive Needs Assessment conducted during the Development Phase of an Incubator Farm program in Northern Colorado. The resulting complete list of incubator programs nationwide is complemented by a spreadsheet of important characteristics and details related to these different Farm Incubator models.
