Item Restricted The caretaker(Colorado State University. Libraries, 2011) Macrae, Miriam Anne, author; Doenges, Judy, 1959-, advisor; Schwartz, Steven, 1950-, committee member; Alexander, Ruth M., 1954-, committee memberThis thesis consists of a fictional novella generally responding to the traditional conventions of the gothic novel. The story is about Gertrude Means, a recent widow who, upon learning that she is about to lose her house, takes a job as caretaker of an old estate called Paradiso. While at Paradiso, as she attempts to deal with her grief and the expectations of her new position, she begins to realize that a presence haunts the estate. Gertrude wants desperately to believe that the presence is that of her late husband, Jack, but it quickly becomes obvious that the presence is actually someone much more dangerous. As Gertrude's identity slowly begins to fracture under the power and malevolence of the presence, the experience forces her to also remember old, repressed conflicts within her marriage, resulting in an eventual collapse of her sense of self.Item Restricted The corners(Colorado State University. Libraries, 2011) Maistros, Nicholas John, author; Doenges, Judy, 1959-, advisor; Schwartz, Steven, 1950-, committee member; Alexander, Ruth M., 1954-, committee memberThe stories collected here have been selected from those completed during my time in the MFA program at Colorado State University. In both assembling these works and ordering them, I tried to highlight moments of growth, experimentation, and range in voice. While their concerns and themes vary, each of these stories harbor the same objective: to look beyond the protective falsehoods we as people and characters present in our daily lives; to speculate as to what might be found when those superficialities are lifted, in times when the only answer we can come to that seems remotely honest is "I don't know." In this, these stories both succeed and fail, for they are, essentially, my speculations.Item Open Access Work of art: a collection of stories and essays(Colorado State University. Libraries, 2005) Franck, Judea, author; Doenges, Judy, 1959-, advisor; Calderazzo, John, committee member; Callahan, Gerald N., 1946-, committee memberThis collection of work, composed over a period of three years, contains stories and essays that explore the emotional struggles of people in fictional and real-life experiences. These stories and essays are concerned with the idea of resilience -- how people and characters reshape their lives after fracturing events. It is a collection influenced by the idea of loss, but also by the hope of resurgence. It details the ways in which characters and people can be hurt, maimed, brokenhearted, and yet find a way to recover.
