Burro race, racers heading up the pass
Photograph showing five contestants and their burros traveling up the west side of Mosquito Pass during the Fourth Annual Rocky Pack-Burro Championship Race in 1952 (the date on the verso of the photograph is probably incorrect). The Race was started in 1949 as part of the town of Fairplay's Gold Days Celebration. It was originally a grueling 22.9 miles starting in Leadville, Lake County and traveling over Mosquito Pass to end in Fairplay, Park County.
