National Park Service natural resource specialist, Ryan Monello, holds the head of a tranquilized cow elk as CSU professor Terry Nett and National Park Service biologist Mary Kay Watry, '95 determine if the animal is suitable for a drug trial. The researchers are injecting cow elk with Lupron, a gonadotropin releasing hormone, in a clinical trial in Rocky Mountain National Park on August 27, 2002 to test the drug's effectiveness as a contraceptive in free ranging animals. The use of gonadotropin releasing hormone for contraception and sterilization has been developed through Terry Nett's research at CSU. This is the first contraception trial on free ranging animals. There will be 20 treated animals and 20 controls.
