dc.descriptionAnimal characteristics: Height: 60 cm; Weight: 1.5-2 kg; Identification: The malleefowl is mottled black, brown, and gray. It also has a black stripe down the center of its breast; Habitat: Arid and semiarid regions, eucalypt forests; Diet: Omnivore: opportunistic; insects, seeds, herbs, flowers; Reproduction: Breeding season falls between August and April. Malleefowl mate for life, building a nest in a dirt mound every year. Eighteen eggs are laid per season with a 60-90 day incubation. The chicks can fly within 24 hours of hatching. The lifespan of malleefowl is 25-30 years; Behavior: Nesting pairs use their beaks to check the temperature within their nest mound. If it's too hot, they scrape soil off of the mound's top. Dirt is added if the nest is too cold; Status: Endangered; Interesting Facts: It can take the malleefowl chicks as long as 15 hours to dig out of the mound when they hatch.
