dc.descriptionAnimal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 182 cm; Weight: 227 kg; Identification: The carapace (shell) shape of the Galapagos tortoise varies by habitat; Habitat: Tropical deciduous forests, scrub forests, savannas, and grasslands; Diet: Herbivore: prickly pear cactus, fruit, bromelids, water ferns, grasses, leaves; Reproduction: Galapagos tortoises mate from January to August. The female lays 2-16 eggs that are incubated underground for 4-8 months. It takes the hatchlings a month to dig their way out of the burrow. This species can live to be over 100 years old; Social Structure: A dominance hierarchy is formed based on the height that the head can be stretched; Status: Threatened: hunted by humans, competition from introduced species; Interesting Facts: Only 15,000 Galapagos tortoises are left in the wild. They are the largest living tortoise species.
