dc.descriptionScientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Artiodactyla; Family: Bovidae; Genus: Bos; Genus species: Bos frontalis.
dc.descriptionAnimal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 250-330 cm; Height: 170-220 cm; Weight: 700-1000 kg; Identification: The gaur is dark brown with paler lower legs. It has a dewlap that hangs from the chin to between the front legs, a shoulder hump, and horns on both sexes; Habitat: Tropical woodlands; Diet: Herbivore: grasses, shoots, fruit; Reproduction: Gaurs breed throughout the year, peaking between December and June. Females gestate 275 days before giving birth to one (rarely two) calf. Calves are weaned at 7-9 months of age. Life expectancy is 30 years; Social Structure: Herds are led by an adult male with 2-40 individuals per herd. Dominance is determined by size; Behavior: The gaur is nocturnal and diurnal. It is very shy and avoids human settlements; Status: Vulnerable; Interesting Facts: The only predators of the gaur are tigers and leopards.
