dc.descriptionAnimal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 82 cm; Weight: 15 kg; Identification: The red-necked wallaby has silver-tipped gray fur, rust red shoulders and upper back, and a pale face and thigh stripes; Habitat: Eucalypt forest; Diet: Herbivore: grass, herbs; Reproduction: On mainland Australia, births occur throughout the year. There are two subspecies, each with different mating patterns. Red-necked wallabies can live for 18 years. Tasmanian populations breed right after giving birth (January-July). After a period of arrested development and a gestation of 30 days, the young is born. It spends 280 days in its mother's pouch and is weaned at 17 months of age; Social Structure: Red-necked wallabies are solitary; Behavior: Activity patterns center around nighttime hours; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: A female can produce two types of milk at one time - one is for the joey in her pouch; the other has a higher fat content for the joey out of the pouch. She may also be carrying a developing embryo in her uterus.
