dc.descriptionAnimal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 45-57 cm ; Weight: Male 2.2-5.2 kg, female 1.6-3.95 kg. ; Identification: The yellow-bellied marmot is overall a yellowish brown color, with white-tipped fur on its sides and back, a buff-yellow neck, hips and belly. There are cream colored areas between the eyes and on the lips. The feet are light buff to dark brown. The tail is grizzly brown in color. ; Habitat: Steppes, alpine meadows, pastures, and forest edges ; Diet: Omnivore: leaves, blossoms, fruit, grain, legumes, and insects ; Reproduction: One to nine young are born after a gestation period of 30-32 days. Yellow-bellied marmots reach maturity at two years of age, but most do not breed until they reach three years of age. ; Social Structure: A single burrow usually contains one adult male and 2-3 adult females. ; Behavior: Marmots hibernate from September to May. ; Status: No special status ; Interesting Facts: The yellow-bellied marmot is known to host the tick that carries Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
