On label: Kia; Design of Gravity Dam, Forces & Stability
October 1, 1986: Lecture 17, Rahim Kia: Lecture topic is "Design of Gravity Dams." Stresses on such dams can come from forces such as uplift, silt, ice, water, and seismic loads (ground acceleration). The toe and heel of a gravity dam are particularly susceptible to horizontal acceleration. Problem solving equations are discussed. Lecture 18: Discussion of gravity dams continues. Kia creates on the whiteboard a table on "External Stability of Gravity Dams," to be used by students utilizing various techniques and equations to resolve problems of stress on gravity dams. He also discusses quick "single step" calculations vis-a-vis "multiple step" complex calculations for more sophisticated solutions.
