Garst (Warren and Genevieve) Collection
For 25 years, from 1962 until 1987, Warren and Genevieve (Genny) Garst spent at least nine months a year shooting film footage for Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, the country's preeminent wildlife and adventure documentary television series. In his role as photographer Warren created over 20,000 images of animals, people, and places across all seven continents. The library’s archival collection contains correspondence between Warren and Genny, research materials, Warren's writings including drafts and index cards for his zoology dictionary Zoolexicon, and their photographic slide collection. This digital collection consists primarily of images of animals dating from 1955 to 1987. More than 600 species are represented. This collection also includes diaries and letters; an interview of the Garsts from 2001; and recordings describing killer whales hunting elephant seals, encounters with gorillas when Warren worked with primatologist Dian Fossey, and an encounter with a cheetah and her cubs.
