Along with providing their photos to scan, Larry and Leann donated to the Dutch Hop documentary project copies of sheet music for "Chickens and Roosters"—both to archive and to use in other ways. They also voiced their agreement for the project's using all copies of Weingardt photos that appear in books. Larry and Leann also donated to the project (including the archives) a copy of "The Paul Weingardt Collection: 44 Great Polkas and Waltzes." Larry had 44 songs copied for this 2-CD set in 2000.
Background information: Paul Weingardt along with his wife Anna, his dulcimer player, Hank Schneider, and Schneider's wife, Frieda, all died in a car accident near Torrington, WY, on Nov. 22, 1964 when driving home from a job. The Weingardt's 10-yr-old son, Kenny, survived the accident but was severely injured.
Notes from conversations while Georgia did scanning: Larry or Leann said, "What made my dad different [from the other Dutch Hop musicians] was that he read music." The brother and sister talked about how Paul worked all the time. The family lived behind the Alpine Music Store, then moved around the corner, and finally moved to the house where Leann now lives on Fern Drive. They thought that this house was palatial when they moved in. When the family moved into that house, Paul closed the store and began teaching out of his home. Larry had enjoyed playing music. After his father was killed, he tried carrying on his father's teaching work for a while but found that he was not inclined in that way. Leann and her brand new husband moved into the Weingardt house after the accident, and Leann took on the responsibility of parenting her brothers.
