Nostoc commune is a free-living, terrestrial cyanobacteria that is able to carry out photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation, thereby enriching soils with nutrients, which can be utilized by plants. N. commune forms colonies called thalli, which are often found in clusters near bunchgrasses, indicating that free-living cyanobacteria may form beneficial associations with plants.
