Brad Hoopes interviews Paul Weathered on December 2, 2008.
On December 2, 2008 Paul Weathered sat down at his home in Fort Collins, CO and told of his experiences in World War II. Paul, born and raised on a farm southwest of Wichita, KS, was newly married and farming when the war broke out. His farming status should have given him an exemption as it was vital to the war effort, but because of a disgruntled member of the local draft board, he soon found himself drafted by the Army. After training in California he shipped off with the 203rd Coast Artillery to the Aleutian Islands to guard against further Japanese advancement there. Paul gives a good account of life there in those harsh conditions. After the war he returned home to his beautiful wife Virginia, who managed to keep the farm going during this time. Because of a chance meeting with a man digging a septic system while on a trip to Seattle, he returned with his equipment and built up a successful business digging septic systems, gas and water lines. He and Virginia were married for 60 years and had a wonderful life together.
