Calvin "Cal" Haarhues: his experiences in World War II, as told in his own words
On April 9, 2009 Calvin "Cal" Haarhues sat down at his home in Greeley, CO and told of his experiences in World War II. Cal, born and raised in Fort Morgan, CO, enlisted in the navy after Pearl Harbor. After training, he was assigned to the Destroyer USS Picking (DD-685). The Picking sailed to the Aleutian Islands and from there took part in the first naval bombardment of the Japanese homeland in the war. Cal was then transferred back to the States for additional training. He then sailed to the Ulithi Atoll in the Pacific. Mogmog island in the atoll was the Navy's recreation island for sea weary ...
