Dear Educator,

I am pleased to present this supplemental Expedition: Yellowstone! curriculum called E:Y! STaRRS. This curriculum is intended to enhance the Expedition: Yellowstone! curriculum originally published in 1989 and updated in 2004. It is intended for use with 4th through 8th grade students. However, there are several lessons that were developed in classes with much younger students in a very urban setting (Central Park in NYC), and other lessons can be adapted both up and down the grade spectrum.

The curriculum is divided into two parts. The first contains background information for both Mammoth Hot Springs and the ideas behind the partnership and conducting field science. The second includes lessons that provide a solid base for learning about the tools and protocols used in the partnership. In particular these are: (a) change over time using photo points, (b) scientific observation and asking of answerable questions, (c) the use of Infrared (IR) thermometers, Kestral® handheld weather monitors, pH indication, and (d) monitoring flow. In addition, there are lessons that teach students about the way scientists categorize the packets of rock that helps to ask answerable questions using modeling.
