Orphan uranium mine, Grand Canyon, Arizona, The

The Orphan mining claim, on the south rim of the Grand Canyon, Arizona, was patented in 1906 and pre-dates the establishment of the National Park. It was originally claimed for copper but is currently being worked for uranium by the Golden Crown Mining Company. About 5870 tons of ore averaging 0.97% U3O8 were shipped through August 1957. The deposit is localized by a near-vertical breccia pipe measuring about 150 feet in diameter. Displacement has been downward a minimum of 250 feet.
