"What Kind of Asian Are You?": Examining the Effects of the Model Minority Discourse on the Identity Formation Experiences of Asian American Emerging Adults
This study examines the impact of the model minority stereotype on Asian American college students and emerging adults. Specifically, it explores the impact that media representations of Asian Americans as the model minority have had on ethnic identity formation of Asian American emerging adults. Utilizing data from 19 in-depth interviews with Asian American emerging adults, this project finds that Asian Americans face dominant institutions that present dissonant discourses about Asian Americans, making it difficult to construct one’s own identity.
