A protein foreign to Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 magnetic bacterial cells was successfully expressed and showed normal function. Magnetococcus marinus were recently utilized to introduce chemotherapy drugs in covalently bound liposomes into the center of a tumor as the magnetic cells were first aligned by an external magnet, which when released, allowed the cells to invade the interior of the tumor as the cells swam to environmental regions of low oxygen.
