Regulation of translation initiation of most eukaryotic mRNAs occurs in a cap-dependent manner. In this study I demonstrate how misregulated translation of two eukaryotic mRNAs via internal ribosomal entry sites (IRESes) contributes to two otherwise unrelated diseases. The 5'leader of the FMR1 gene contains high guanosine/cytosine nucleotide content, including the CGG trinucleotide repeats associated with Fragile X Syndrome.
