dc.descriptionAnimal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 90-115 cm; Weight: 4-6 kg; Identification: The tayra is dark brown to black in color. It has a yellow or white patch on its throat; Habitat: Forests; Diet: Omnivore: vegetable matter, fruit, birds, small mammals; Reproduction: After gestating for 63-67 days, female tayras give birth to three kits in May; Social Structure: Tayras can often be found in pairs or small groups; Behavior: Tayras are often compared to the North American fisher or to other martens; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The tayra has a large home range of 10-24 square kilometers, where they will travel between 2-8 kilometers in this range per day. They are fond of papayas and can become tame if undisturbed when they raid fruit near houses and can be kept as a pet. They were once used by indigenous people to control rodents.
