Marijuana research at the National Institute on Drug Abuse
While marijuana is illegal under federal law, most of the states in the United States have moved to decriminalize or legalize it in some form. Public opinion about marijuana use has become more permissive, while proliferating marijuana dispensaries for medical or recreational use are providing ways to consume marijuana not previously seen before. We are learning about some short-term effects of these policy changes; however, many questions remain unanswered about their longer-term public health impacts as well as other social and economic effects.
