dc.descriptionOn June 23, 2012, smoke from the Waldo Canyon fire was first observed in Pike National Forest, approximately three miles west of Colorado Springs and north of U.S. Highway 24 in El Paso County, Colorado. The fire reached the Cedar Heights community in Colorado Springs on June 24, and crossed to the Mountain Shadows community on June 26. It moved to the east and north toward the Peregrine community and the U.S. Air Force Academy. The fire was 100% contained on July 10. At the time, the Waldo Canyon fire was the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history, destroying over 345 homes, killing two people, and burning approximately 18,250 acres.
