Raymond Van Why: his experiences in World War II, as told in his own words
On March 15, 2010 Raymond Van Why sat down at his home in Greeley, CO and told of his experiences in World War II. Ray, born and raised in Pierce, CO, served as a machinist mate aboard the USS Rochambeau (AP-63). The purpose of the ship was to transport troops into battles and then to evacuate casualties back home. In doing this, Ray crossed the Pacific 9 times in the 14 months he was with the ship. He was chosen for Officer's Training School and between leaving the ship and starting school, he married his lovely wife Ruth. They were married for 56 years until her passing in 1999.
