Brad Hoopes interviews Martin Lubow on Novermber 14, 2009.
On November 14, 2009 Martin Lubow sat down at his home in Fort Collins, CO and told of his experiences in World War II. Martin, born in Pittsburgh, PA, was in college at the outbreak of war and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. While in training, there was a notice seeking volunteers for an unnamed and 'dangerous' assignment and Martin volunteered. After a vetting process, he was selected into the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). The OSS was the forerunner of today's Central Intelligence Agency. Initially assigned to England where he assumed he would be dropped behind enemy lines in Europe, he was re-assigned to the China-Burma-India Theater. Part of a 3-man team, Team Reptile, he spent the better part of a year living in rice patties in the Japanese-controlled part of China. He organized black operations with the local Chinese against the Japanese. After the war, he returned home, finished his degree and began teaching. In 1952 he entered a national writing contest and won first place, with the prize being a trip to Europe. This was a major turning point in his life as while on this trip, it gave him the confidence to come back and get a degree in law. After obtaining his law degree and passing the bar, he went on to have a long and very distinguished career.
