William "Bill" Funke: his experiences in World War II, as told in his own words
On July 22, 2011 William "Bill" Funke sat down at his home in Ft. Collins, CO and told of his experiences in World War II. Bill, born and raised in Atchison, KS, served in Co A, 17 Armored Division (Hellcats). He tells of landing in Le Harve, France and then fighting on the front lines until taken prisoner and held in a German POW camp (Stalag 11B) for 31/2 months. He was liberated just before the Germans surrendered. After the war he returned home, got his college degree at the Univ. of Colorado and then would go on to a successful 35 year career in education with the Haxtun and Ft. Collins ...
