During mitosis, duplicated sister chromatids attach to microtubules emanating from opposing sides of the bipolar spindle through large protein complexes called kinetochores. The kinetochore proteins that bind spindle microtubules are exquisitely regulated to ensure correct segregation of genetic material at mitotic exit.
