Decades of industrial activities involving mining, smelting and refining of lead have caused major increases in lead levels in the environment, resulting in soil as one of the important pathways of lead exposure. Because of its access to the railroad systems and nearby availability of coal and lime deposits, the city of Pueblo, Colorado has a long history of smelting sites. The waste products from smelting sites contain heavy metals like lead. Such waste was disposed of around Pueblo neighborhoods.
