Abstract

The artist's statement: Since the founding of our country we have celebrated and strived for the idealized "American Dream." In the beginning it was simply a wish for freedom and prosperity, but the American Dream is now synonymous with upward mobility, home ownership, and a bigger-is-better mentality. Many Americans believe that a new home in the suburbs will afford them a better quality of life, but a long term study conducted by Smart Growth America found that on average people who live in sprawling areas have a smaller chance of upward mobility, spend more money on housing and transportation, have a higher body mass index, and shorter life span. "Little Boxes" is an observation of America's penchant for building quickly and cheaply, often resulting in a tax on the environment and a failure to form and provide a sense of community. Through this body of work I hope to inspire my audience to work towards more compact, creative, and holistic living conditions in America.
